Four Years of Compounding Digital Growth at a Major Sports Brand
At the interactive media company of a major professional sports league, Zachary Leifer spent five years producing digital marketing for one of the biggest brand franchises in sports. Audience growth compounded 25% per year for four consecutive years, and that audience converted: ticket sales up 30%, memberships up 60%, and magazine subscriptions grown tenfold.
The challenge
A massive brand does not automatically produce a growing digital business. The audience was there; the work was turning attention into a system that grew year after year and converted into revenue: tickets, memberships, and subscriptions, rather than just page views.
The approach
The work spanned the full digital journey: producing and managing email and social media communications, designing and developing front-end websites, and connecting audience growth to the commercial products it could feed. Growth was treated as a system rather than a season: traffic compounding into a database, the database feeding email and loyalty programs, and those programs converting attention into tickets, memberships, and subscriptions.
A centerpiece was developing and deploying the launch of the franchise's flagship fan membership program, along with loyalty programs for other clubs, connecting fandom to a membership relationship the business could grow year over year.
The scale was real: an email program reaching over 1,000,000 fans, mobile and social communications reaching over 7,000,000, and sponsorship program production for national brands across telecom, automotive, airline, insurance, and consumer electronics categories. The role also extended to league-level digital properties.
The outcomes
The principle behind it
For the companies State of Mind Strategies advises, this early-career case is on the site for a reason: it shows the same system thinking at a different scale and era. Audience, database, relationship, revenue, the chain has not changed in fifteen years. What has changed is the tooling, and companies that master the chain outperform companies that chase the tools.
Attention is not a business until it converts, and conversion compounds when the journey is built as a connected system. The same revenue journey thinking, visibility feeding capture, capture feeding relationships, relationships feeding revenue, is the foundation of the Commercial Growth Model today.
